Curb Your Cravings - Not Your Enthusiasm

According to data published from various studies published throughout the last 5 years, every January, roughly 40% of Americans vow to change something in their lives, in the form of a resolution. One of the top 3 resolutions is to lose weight1.

According to data published from various studies published throughout the last 5 years, every January, roughly 40% of Americans vow to change something in their lives, in the form of a resolution. One of the top 3 resolutions is to lose weight1.
A study published in 2002 by Scranton University1, shows statistics for the percentage of people who had made New Year's resolutions, as the resolve to keep those resolutions dwindles steadily over time:
- Resolutions held past the first week: 75%
- Resolutions held past 2 weeks: 71%
- Resolutions held after one month: 64%
- Resolutions held after 6 months: 46%
The Study gathered data on the usefulness of resolutions made in January. To gather data, 2 groups of subjects were followed over a 6 month period and interviewed. The groups were made up of:
- People who had NOT sat down and made resolutions.
- People who DID make the effort to create resolutions.
The Study found that after 6 months time 46% of the people who HAD made resolutions were successfully accomplishing their resolution goals - compared to only 4% success rate of those who did NOT create resolutions .
This is good news for people who have reachable aspirations this year. For those of you who are seeking to shed extra pounds this year, it may be in your favor to write down a resolution or two. By keeping your resolutions in an accessible place, you create a reviewable bookmarklet of your goals. This will help improve your willingness to keep your word, as well as serve as a constant reminder of what you are working toward.
Once you have established your basic goals for weight loss, it is time to confront the barrage of seemingly frustrating obstacles, some are - portion control, peer pressure, advertising, self esteem, cravings and lack of motivation.
One of the biggest problems dieters face is curbing cravings for high calorie foods. The salty, crunchy and mostly grease laden mass produced items like chips, are readily available via retail shelves and can be found virtually everywhere - vending machines, break rooms and parties etc.
What can be done about cravings? Deprivation - The act of denying oneself access to these treats? Well studies also reveal that denying cravings only results in more weight gain, because most dieters succumb to the internal turmoil caused by the denial, and then start the binges. Binges are mainly eating large amounts of high calorie foods for an extended period, disregarding portion control or the caloric values. This can create an ugly cycle with dieters. It can be quite disheartening.
I think one effective method to ward off cravings is to find a similar food - one that is close to the texture, and taste of that high calorie, unneeded food you might crave. The key is to find the version that is the least in calories, yet still as tasty.
Thankfully flavor technologies are starting to catch up with the science of creating and marketing low calorie products. The bland, obviously doctored tastes of diet foods past seems to have dissolved, much like the once bad after tastes.
So keeping in tune with this post, I wanted to share that I discovered something recently, that was pretty nifty. Kellogg's brand 'Special K ' has started marketing low calorie snacks as part of their pro-low calorie product line. I think by far the multi-grain crackers they just released are one of the tastiest store bought crackers I have had in a while.

Kellogg's brand 'Special K ' has started marketing low calorie snacks as part of their pro-low calorie product line. I think by far the multi-grain crackers they just released are one of the tastiest store bought crackers I have had in a while.
The closest retail comparison I could think of is "Wheat Thins". Now I have not been a fan of "Wheat Thins", the crackers are a bit too substantial for my taste. And they have an overpowering taste that competes with anything you add to them. Plus I find that I get this odd after taste when I have had a few at a time. But Special K's multi-grain crackers surprised me. They have a very light & airy texture with bits of whole grains - but can still hold their own when used with a thicker dip or soft cheese. The taste of the cracker comes off very pleasant, with a slight hint of onion. Very buttery.
I honestly can say they were extremely good. Something I will keep in my pantry.
There is a second variety of Special K's crackers I tasted. The flavor is Italian Tomatoes & Herb. Now if you are someone who loves the taste of tomato bisque or sun-dried tomatoes - you will appreciate this variety.I am not a fan of tomato bisque. I love marinara sauces and sun-dried tomato but something about that kind of soup just doesn't do it for me.
I did taste the crackers enough to get a sense of their flavor. The tomato flavor is pretty heavy in these crackers. IThe crackers actually reminded me of tomato soup with an aged cheese melted into it.
My husband (who happens to be an avid tomato bisque consumer) loved these crackers. As did my 20 month old. Plus they passed the "picky eater" test with my 5 yr old.
So if you are looking for something to curb your cravings, these crackers seem like a win-win. Per serving of 17 crackers it is only 90 calories. They come in individual portion controlled .77 oz pouches, or you can purchase a box of 6 pouches, and for larger amounts, the 8 oz carton is great for parties.

i was a ceraloholic when i started my diet
You know, those special K tomato crackers look awesome. I haven't seen them in the store, but again I wasn't looking for them. I'll have to give them a try.
You know, I haven't written down my resolutions - good idea. I have though put a picture of a swimsuit model on my fridge to 'remind me' I am on a diet... maybe not a good idea now that I have teenage boys LOL
You know, special k actually has some great, low fat and tasty products. Some are sweet enough to curb that sweet tooth - but have vitamins and are low fat. Great post!
I wonder how many kept up their resolutions from last year :)
u really combining the healthy food with it's good taste on a smart way ... Thank you so much
Great blog, very nice.
Thanks.
great post! thanks, interesting read.
Well if these passed the "picky eater" test, I guess you have no choice, LOL. There are a couple of those in our house as well. I guess I am the "picky one" though (love tomato Bisque) Nice reviews. Beale
great post. nice to know you
nice tips, but I can't find that food in my country.
Great blog it like it
Hi,
One thing special is K products come with Iron and calcium rich. Is it cause some obesity related problems, due to high nutrition factors?
Nice tips but they are not arganic, no?
The Special K Crackers are the best! I bought some recently from Costco and now I'm hooked.
Plus my cousin is the girl on the latest commercial! :)
cool!
The post is great and I truly understand the craving part to a diet. Eating something similar to what your used to eating makes so much sense. I used to eat regular fig newtons and now i eat the diet brand. I used to drink coke and now i drink diet pepsi. I lost 10 pounds in 2 months just in making these small shifts in my eating.
Great stuff, those look nice but unfortunately I haven't seen them in stores.
the article is really informational, I will have to keep an eye on the comments.. thanks for sharing.
"""nice post.. , its a healthy food.., thanks for your info :)"""
Thanks for the Special K's multi-grain and Italian Tomatoes & Herb review. I will try this one.
As my son says, "stop it, stop it, stop it"!
Special K Multi-grain Crackers are good but i never tasted the Italian Tomato & Herb flavour
I'm really surprised that almost 50% of people made it to the 6 month mark! Wow!
One should not deprive themselves from not eating anything. I would like to see a resolution from people joining Gym and being regular in exercise. I will take my own example. I joined gym and found a good trainer who made sure I don't lift focus on building muscles with so much mass on my body, he made me walk on the tracks and asked me to do aerobics etc and some light weight lifting. I did everything, I put in my everything everyday but I don't remember myself taking too much care about what to eat and what not to eat. I did avoid some sweets but overall I think if you work out properly, you can lose weight. There's no shortcut remember!
Really a good resource...and helpful information...
Thanks to the author for the useful contribution...
Really appreciate it
Its in the human nature they always try to spam something which gives them even a little bit of an advantage. I run a few forums and i had dofollow there before but had to change it to nofollow because of the amount of spam. Most of them are humans and not automated programs. Comments like ( Great Post ) ( Appreciate the contribution ) and ( Wow its amazing ) are posted quite often and at once one can know its spam.
I would only say if you need a backlink from a comment...you should earn it...at least read the post and comment if you have knowledge on it.
I make a new years resolution every year, and I dont thing I have ever lasted past 2 weeks.
The follow through on resolutions actaully seems astonsihly high. If figure for teh average person they 75% don't make it one week.
Great article. I think people gain weight because they deprive themselves of food and then later eat more than they should. this really messes up the metabolism resulting in gain of weight. I really recommend people eat in intervals and not worry so much about what they eat, just try to eat health and exercise at last 1 hour a day, whatever that might be. If this is done right then slowly the body will come into shape.
eat in small portions as my mother would say.... definitely worth trying =)
I can be proud to say that I stuck to my resolution so far this year by eating healthier. By doing that, I have more energy and losing weight! Love the blog too!
Reading about Special K crackers just got my mouth watering.
I've had a look on the internet and - woe of woes - they're not available in England !
is really interesting! thanks for the useful information and good luck!
Nice and impressive information tips are just great keep it up
This site is very nice. have tried a few times and it is just too boring. I have put blueberries and bananas in it....
Great and informative blog, nice tips. Thank you.
I love kelloggs, it starts my day right. It's good that they have a new products, one that is worth trying.
Thanks for sharing!
I used to eat a lot of special k products when i was trying to lose weight.. Although they did help me lots.. it really hurt my budget.. where I live, special K products are very expensive :(
Special K Multi-grain crackers are very good.Really nice tips,Thanks for sharing with us.
I've been following your blogs for a while now and this is honestly one of the best I've read. Its a simple and organised blog. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I really recommend people eat at the intervals and not worry so much about what they eat, just try to eat health and exercise in the last hour 1 a day, whatever it is. If done well, then slowly enter the body in shape.
Eating less is important, but so is doing sports. One without the other is less effective.
Great article. It's all about diet, we all know. Healthy food makes a healthy body!
How many carbs did those Special K's crackers have? I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes so I need to watch the carb intake.
I can pretty much eat anything if I ether have or are going to exercise but that does not work all the time as you can see.
These crackers would be great if they are low carb. In future post perhaps you could list the carbs for guys like me. nice post other wise.
Thanks for the Special K's multi-grain and Italian Tomatoes and other things review, I think with all specified above we need courage to lose weight.
It's good to hear that nowadays there are more and more products that are low calorie but are still tasty are available in the market...I haven't tried Special K, yet but after reading your post now I'm interested in trying it out.
These crackers were really not all that
I think your idea for setting daily goal is pretty good regarding weight loss. Thanks for sharing this nice post.
I just started dieting and after treading this craker news, its really a useful to loose weight and reduce craving.
i think every one make resolutions/goals if one should to change something that is not so good for the eyes for the health. the data gathered was quite interesting because such fact will encourage people like myself to improve weight control and personality by setting goals ahead and not "do now think later" way
I work at a nutritional store and always looking for recipe ideas to pass along to my customers. I am by no means a talented chef, so tasty and easy to make foods are always welcome.
I am surprised that half managed to stick with it after 6 months. A lot of times gyms will try to sell people 12 month memberships at big discounts at the beginning of the year with the logic that most will quit. My roommate's boyfriend is in this situation, he bought a 12 month membership based on a new years resolution that only lasted a few weeks.
think with all specified above we need courage to lose
That's great but your site make me hungry!!!
I think with all specified above we need courage
Wow, I'm shocked at the caloric value of these chips. This is very exciting as I am addicted to tortilla chips. Hopefully these low calorie snacks can help me curb my obsession of nachos. LOL. Thanks for the post.
I loved this post, I will start my resolution earlie because of reading your post.
P.S. I love special K.
high calorie food is not good for health, and need a lot of exercise but we people are so lazy that we can't do that.
Hmmm.. very healthy, delicious and tasty treats.
Interesting flavors! Would love to try the Italian Tomatoes and herbs. Must be a real treat!
It taste delicious.
I have not tried that one but I think I'm going to love it. Wanna buy it later.
Helpful post, I am going to give a 2nd look at special k products the next time I'm at the market. Thanks!
Special K has always revolutionized healthy snacks. I think that crackers is a good way of keeping us not just in shape but also healthy. Great post, I like your writing style.
I love Special K cereal and bars. I eat them both almost every day!. I didn't know they had any new products, I will definately have to try them! I think I would like the multigrain crackers better though. I am not a huge fan of tomatoes. But I guess we will see! I will give some more feedback after I try them. Thanks!
ı really recommend people eat in intervals and not worry so much about what they eat, just try to eat health
A great article for those people who started a special nutritional programme!
Rhanks for sharing the info!=)
My girlfriend has been watching her weight and would really benefit from this article. I'll pass this information along to her. I think that these days, pills and crazes should be replaced with letting time do its work and following a sensible regimen. Thank you!
Well it always happens with people that after taking a resolution they can't follow it for long..I also tried sometimes ..But its true u need to have proper determination if you want to lose weight.
I just came across your site. It is crazy how time flies. Before you know it, we will be setting resolutions once again.
Thanks for the reviews! I need to lose a bit of weight myself, so this'll help plenty.
Also, isn't this blog updated anymore? cause the last post was 9 months ago. =\
very interesting article , by the way i tried them and they are simply delicious
My family uses a lot of the Special K products and we love them. I'll admit I'd never seen the tomato crackers before, so I'll be on the look out for those!
resolutions here , resolutions there, all is a question of courage i think
I've been thinking about my resolutions for next January actually. Special K products could be a way to get in tune as you say. May have a go. good post.
I rarely post, but I wanted to say thanks for sharing this information.
Excellent post! I especially likes your input on new years resolutions. I find the stats to be interesting, and I know from experience, true.
Looks like a great nutritious option for our cupboards.
good review.
i never try this product. i'm gonna try it soon.
I love Special K! Thanks for the post!
This sounds very tasty. I like all your recipes. I tried one and it was really good. I have a business catering in San Francisco, so I may use it one day.
Portions are definitely a positive way to cut back on your intake. It's interesting to see the New Year's Resolutions that people make...a lot about losing weight and being more healthy.
Italian Tomato & Herb flavor is an excellent idea for a flavor - never heard of it but I guess I need to try it sometime on the future.
Wowww, all of a sudden i have gotten very hungry :P
Too bad that finding these things abroad can be quite difficult :( Gonna have to get something as close as possible now...
NOW THAT is how you title a blog article. Pulled me in right away.
Great article I must say. I have noticed when I crave say chips it's not so much the chip I crave but something crunchy and salty... You made some really good points.
Great Article. Love the Special K stuff. Starts my day, and at times ends it. Should have had more people make it :)
I'm always seeking for new things, esp for healthy products. But the matter is I really need food rich of calories - so I have so eat not less than 5 time/day. Thanx for a new tip product, I hope I'll meet it my store))
what I liked the most on your site was the statement-- Curb Your Cravings - "Not Your Enthusiasm" Your blog rocks..
Yes, people are making firm resolutions to begin their years in a fresh perspective. Even I had one, that of exercising regularly atleast half an hour.
Thanks for posting this. Awesome idea!
I actually prefer whole wheat or whole grain snacks than multi-grain. I read somewhere that it's healthier. Though I'd probably grab those Special K crackers just because they look tasty. :D
Nice article.I will come under Resolutions held after 6 months: 46%.Thanks for sharing.
I really enjoy watching your pictures in the kitchen. Its does tell me how neat is your business
This is wonderful, i love Special K products. I will definitely try these new products.
To achieve good change, of course we need to take an effort to make it realized. Speaking of losing weight, it's not hard anyway if you are persistent enough to achieve that goal to lose weight. If you're not then expect nothing. Change in lifestyle like minimizing your cravings is a must to make that healthy and fit body yours to keep.
Great post. Looking forward for more like this one. Thanks!
