Suffering From An Irrational Fear of Cooking?

Do you, or someone you know, suffer from CPD (Culinary Performance Dysfunction)? What is CPD? It is the aversion to cooking, in a kitchen, anything besides microwave burritos or jarred spaghetti.

People who have CPD have an irrational fear that they can't use culinary techniques to crank out a fabulous tasting meal. People with CPD, when faced with cooking, in the kitchen, conjure up horrible disasters that will unfurl if they attempt a recipe.

Ingredient experimentation is a extreme anxiety trigger for people suffering CPD. It is far worse that attempting to follow a recipe.

If this sounds like you, or someone you know, there is help. As Shakespeare mused:  "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt." The mind is a powerful tool, which can be both helpful and damning. But CPD sufferers can overcome their aversion to the culinary world. Exposure is the key.

In a recent article published by Globe and Mail (see "Cooking as Therapy"), Julia Belluz, delves into the emotional and psychological healing aspects that cooking affords those who are open to the subtle nuances found in participating in the simple acts of prepping, creating and presenting their food.

A wonderful cookbook that I feel can bridge the gap between "aspiring" to be successful in the kitchen, but fearing it,  and actually being successful, is Entertain Like a Gentleman, by David Harap.

This cookbook while geared for the testosterone set (i.e men), can be a nice addition to any cooking library. David presents the recipes and contents of  this cookbook in a very logical manner.

David Harap gently eases the reader into entertaining and cooking, with the first section entitled "Entertaining 101", which gives tips on stress-free entertaining, tools, metric conversions, and even talks about the 10 assumptions of all recipes.

The next 15 sections are devoted to assembling, cooking and creating a mood in 15 different entertaining scenarios:

  • Scotch Tasting Affair
  • Super-bowl / March Madness
  • Cheese and Wine Party
  • The Initial Flame (grilling)
  • Pool Party
  • Tailgating in Style
  • Oktoberfest
  • Cooking With Kiddos
  • Double Date Night
  • Romantic Dinner (Spring/Summer)
  • Romantic Dinner Another Night (Fall/Winter)
  • Breakfast in Bed
  • Brunch with the In-laws
  • Cocktail Party Finger Food
  • Poker Night With The Boys
Each of the 15 sections include tasty, innovative recipes which include appetizers, entrées with complimenting sides, and a delicious dessert to complete the themed experience.

The recipes are written in an easy to understand fashion, intended to help aid in a less-stressful entertaining experience.  Included in the book are shopping and equipment lists, with blank pages  after every section to allow you to jot down thoughts or notes - making Entertain Like a Gentleman perfect for the cooking inept or the seasoned culinary traveler.

So hopefully when you are looking to find gifts this season, think of those who suffer from CPD, and try to  enable them, into the culinary world, which they fear so well. Encourage them, and give them the tools to inspire confidence. But over all, be supportive.

The view expressed here are mine & mone alone. I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Parent Reviewers. I received a "proof copy" of Entertain Like a Gentleman, so that I could provide my honest feedback. Please read more about Renaissance Culinaire's Disclosure Policy.

Wow, I never thought there is something called Culinary Performance Dysfunction. I have enjoyed cooking all my life. My grandmother taught me how to cook when I was 6 and from that time on, I have been trying to experiment anything that can be eaten. This is a great post about this cooking talent-threat. Thanks

As soon as you said ingredient experimentation I knew you were talking about my sister who definitely has CPD. Even though "Entertain Like a Gentleman" looks like a book made more for men, I think this cookbook would be great for my sister.

Thanks for the link to the book and I will definitely try to make sure I get this book in my sister's hands before she starts experimenting with ingredients again.

I had no idea there was such a thing called, "Culinary Performance Dysfunction." It's pretty unfortunate because I think cooking is a great way to bond with your family, friends and loved ones. You get to express your creativity and it's just simply care-free; at least for me it is. Thanks for the words of encouragement; hopefully these tips you gave out with come in handy! Happy holidays!

I think a lot of recipes in the applicable tariff is very important details are hidden, and unfortunately does not look like something to eat.

CPD? Now it is a disease?!

I do hope my hesitancy in cooking is not CPD. I like to think that it's just lack of confidence that what I will come up with is not good.

I do not want to be sentenced to a gastronomic life of takeout counters & food deliveries. It is unhealthy, not to mention, not earth-friendly.

I think I am one of those with this dysfunction. It's not that I don't want to be a good cook I am just terrible at it. But I am not going to let that stop me, I have been practicing on my husband and making some incremental improvements. So I am happy with that.

But as you have said, it only needs exposure and may I add, constant practice. I like the book, I'm not really good in cooking and would like to learn new things when it comes to preparing foods. I have heard CPD for the first time. As quoted from a well-known person, if there's a voice telling you that you shouldn't cook, then by all means cook, and that voice will be silenced. Cooking is a joyous thing to do and one shouldn't be afraid of experimenting and going beyond his limit. Thanks for the post!

Thankfully I love cooking but have never baked anything (aside from a potato) so we compliment each other pretty well.

I am very grateful to my family. My father specially for allowing me to experiment with anything cooking while young.

It is very important to get it wrong a lot. Cooking is trial and error extended for a very long term.

No one taught me how to cook and sometimes I feel I am a natural, but then I look at my years of absolute disasters and think to myself: Ah .. that is why. Long learning curve but one which I was never aware. I never had goals to become good in cooking.

Cooking is like learning how to talk, communicate. You never tell a child: 'gosh you really can't speak well now can you?'. You just allow the child to develop over long term, fearless and selfless in a way. Cooking is about giving joy to others.

Now anything with pastry. I don't know that. Need to learn soon!

While I don't suffer from CPD, I do own a copy of Entertain Like A Gentleman (Full disclosure: It was given to me as a gift by my S.O.) and I very much agree with your comments.

While it definitely leans towards the male end of entertaining (Scotch tasting and tailgating) I think it might work as in some ways as a window into the mind of men who like to entertain.

If you're a wife or girlfriend looking to throw your hubby or boyfriend a themed birthday party or you've just been put in charge of poker night, I think so long as he is on the less scruffy end of the male spectrum he would really get a kick out of some of the recipes and entertaining ideas in this book.

I think defining the line between laziness and a fear of cooking may be the distinguishing factor between buying someone a cookbook or calling the psych ward - respectively. Given how popular Food Network, Travel Channel, etc. are, it's hard to believe people are still afraid to cook. Interesting read!

Great article.

I have always loved cooking but think I must now be suffering from CPD.

I recently went back to the workforce after 11 years of caring for kids. When I was working at home I loved cooking dinner now it is all I can do to toss a frozen meal into the microwave!

the fear of the cooking process or even the fear of the recipe itself. You get to express your creativity and it is just simply care free. It's not that I don't want to be a good cook I am just terrible at it. But I am not going to let that stop me, I have been practicing on my husband and making some incremental improvements.

I know, every time I try new meals for family and friends, I can't help but getting a bit nervous. But, hey, it was worth the sweat, once thumbs up are given. For me cooking is a means to discover new realms - but is difficult to explain, especially to the kids who can survive on macaroni and cheese happily ever after...

Cooking is a joyous thing to do and one shouldn't be afraid of experimenting and going beyond his limit. Thanks for the post!

I don't have a fear of cooking or CPD, I'm just plain bad at it. I always let things cook too long, forget ingredients, etc. Cooking truly is an art.

My mom always made a huge deal about cooking like it was super hard. When I started to cook for myself I found it pretty easy.
