Baking is Poetry

What is Baking mean to You? Here is a poem I just jotted down in an effort to get back to food blogging again.  I want to hear from my readers --- is baking a smell, a sight or sound? A memory?

Baking

It is patience
It is understanding
the
ebb
and
flow
 Of ingredients
Of Environmental factors

It is flirting
with formulations
to achieve
the ultimate
in taste combination -
Whether
that result achieved
is
simplistic
or
quite complicated.

Baking is
the warmth of a stack oven
Of the freshly
de-panned product.

Baking is
 the satisfaction
Of creation.
 Of the tears
which
well in their eyes
when a taste, a smell
invokes
memories
of home,
Of a loved one
that
has
passed on.

Baking is
the alcoholic fumes
permeating
from a container
that
housed
your starter -
your poolish -
your biga -
or
your mix.

Baking is intoxication.

I also experimented with a new add-on  for GIMP called "Polar Inversion" - so I used it on the pic below. I think it encapsulates production quite well, you know, the total process seems full circle.

You know, generally I don't like the polar coordinance filter, but for an image like this, I really enjoyed the effect it created.

Regarding your blog entry, to me you did a good job connecting your thoughts in a creative manner and relating them to cooking, which is highly creative.

Kudos.

Baking to me brings me back to when I was a kid and my Mom used to back me the best chocolate chip cookies known to man. In recent times my mom doesn't bake as much. She has kinda became a health nut. Can you convince her that baking=life?

I got teary-eyed with the general message of this poem. It really got into me because I was able to reminisce the days when me and my mother would be cooking together. She let me taste every food she cooked when I was younger and asked my opinions about it. I got familiar with the different smells and tastes of foods because of that experience. Things changed now, already quite busy but whenever I smell the familiar aroma of foods similar to what me and my mother had been cooking, I readily remember those times we had together. Thanks a lot for sharing your poem. I appreciate it a lot. Brought a lot of good memories to me. ^.^

I regularly find by myself conflicted when creating a blog submit because I see myself producing greater than persons need to examine, but I feel that I have got to do the topic matter justice by totally addressing it. I believe that by subsequent a number of these policies I conclude up lowering out essential elements for the discussion. I guess you have to locate a stability.

What I love best about this poem is the line that goes "a smell invokes memories of home, Of a loved one that has passed on". It is indeed nostalgic each time I smell something baked, it brings me back the memories of my late grandmother who loves to bake so much. She used to bake brownies every weekend and gives it to me and my cousins. Ah! Those were the days. I miss her now. Wonderful poem!

For me..baking is a memory! A collection of bad and good memories of my late grandpa. When I was a kid, he used to bake me a strawberry cake! And I really love it. Remembering it's smell every time I go to Red Ribbon's store made me feel so sad as well as happy. I can't help myself but to cry. Memories might passed away but it's footprints in my heart won't fade forever.

For me Baking is the technique of prolonged cooking of food by dry heat acting by convection, and not by radiation normally in an oven, but also in hot ashes, or on hot stones. It is primarily used for the preparation of bread, cakes, pastries and pies, tarts, quiches, cookies and crackers.

For me baking is outpouring one's inner optimism coupled with the passion of patience. Baking is the best thing which could develop one's determination since a baker patiently render all of his time to get his desired taste. By loving the craft of baking, attitude and and the baked product blends well for a baker's desired taste.

Well, writing poems are what people usually do if they can't express their thoughts and feelings in words. And others write to give emphasis to the things that they like. Just like cooking. And that's if you are an inspired cook. Writing poems needs to have deep inspiration in order to create a good masterpiece. Writing poems wholeheartedly is like cooking with love. Agree? I like your poem. It's like telling us what you feel while cooking. I hope to read more poems from you.

I have no special power, ability, strength, creativeness and art when it comes in baking and cooking. When I read the first word of your poem it keeps me thinking 'what is this mean?! I go on and on until I realise that baking the big word stands for cheerfulness that push me to learn more. Not just eating but doing baking once in a while..Nice pal!

1:26 AM, January 28, 2011 Reply

It's quite a good poem. Anyway, baking is one of my pastime and it was actually my mom who persevered to teach me everything about baking. I would say that baking is not just as simply as that, you need to master all the processes and the right way to bake in order to get the best and delicious result. I guess the secret is you have to enjoy every moment of it.

Great picture. I have to try this Polar Inversion too.
For me baking and cooking in general is always experiment, often with an unexpected end :)
When it ends good it's a joy and a happiness. But when it ends not very good (I mean not tasty as I expected) I say to myself that it's still a healthy food and that next time I'll go better.
