Baking is Poetry

What is Baking mean to You? Here is a poem I just jotted down in an effort to get back to food blogging again.  I want to hear from my readers --- is baking a smell, a sight or sound? A memory?

Baking

It is patience
It is understanding
the
ebb
and
flow
 Of ingredients
Of Environmental factors

It is flirting
with formulations
to achieve
the ultimate
in taste combination -
Whether
that result achieved
is
simplistic
or
quite complicated.

Baking is
the warmth of a stack oven
Of the freshly
de-panned product.

Baking is
 the satisfaction
Of creation.
 Of the tears
which
well in their eyes
when a taste, a smell
invokes
memories
of home,
Of a loved one
that
has
passed on.

Baking is
the alcoholic fumes
permeating
from a container
that
housed
your starter -
your poolish -
your biga -
or
your mix.

Baking is intoxication.

I also experimented with a new add-on  for GIMP called "Polar Inversion" - so I used it on the pic below. I think it encapsulates production quite well, you know, the total process seems full circle.

The poem is so inspiring, I remember when I was younger I lived half of my life in the kitchen with my mom and her oven along with her baking pans, we sing, we laugh and we taste together, and it was all full of fond memories with my Mom I will never forget in my whole life.

Nice one! I think you could always make up poems even from the simple things. I think baking has something unique in it that not everyone could see. This one reminds of the failures I had in baking while I was a kid, what a mess I made on that day.

Nice poem! I miss my mother she used to bake me when i was a little kid. When he bakes i always stay at the kitchen with her. She taught me how to bake but i have no interest. I just like to eat.

Great picture. I have to try this Polar Inversion too.
For me baking and cooking in general is always experiment, often with an unexpected end :)
When it ends good it's a joy and a happiness. But when it ends not very good (I mean not tasty as I expected) I say to myself that it's still a healthy food and that next time I'll go better.

For me baking means teaching values, maths, patience, all at the same time, to my children. Why? Because, first, we select a recipe together (be it cookies, cakes, whatever they choose) (this involves exchanging opinions, discussing), then we select and mix the ingredients (fractions, decision making), and finally we bake (patience, understanding that things take time, and more). Well, that's how I see baking, as a moment of sharing and education with my children. Great!

Something so warming about baking and a lovely thing to do with your kids as well. Nice poem... thanks!

I was able to relate to the fourth stanza of this poem. I usually have this experience of remembering a lot of things from the past just by the smell of related foods that have something to do with the experience. And to add my own perception about this topic, I think baking is a very good way to express ourselves, most especially the love that we have for the people we are cooking or baking for. Thank you very much for the post. :)

Great poem! What are written in the poem are all true. You can experience different emotions when you are baking and doing it really requires patience. Many would say that the output of what you have cooked depends on the emotions that you feel at the time that you are cooking and I would say that I agree to that.

This is the perfect blog for anyone who wants to know about this topic. You know so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I really would want...HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a subject thats been written about for years. Great stuff, just great!

Great poem, and who would not love a great poem about food. We all LOVE food. It is so true about certain tastes and smells invoking memories. After eating all that food, I like having a few puffs on my t-rex electronic cigarette

For me baking is a sight and smell. Since I'm not really good in baking, I really appreciate those who knew how to bake. I appreciate also cakes and cookies. Those foods give me time to relax during my busy hours and makes me think of why I work (to provide food for my family and myself-to be satisfied with life). Anyway I also consider baking as memory, a nostalgia of good and bad memories with a friend of mine who I didn't see anymore at present. Whew!

The poetry is really nice, and shows your interest in baking. For me, baking is a tough time job, I have tried many times, but every time,I failed, so I decided to give up :(

The future... seems to me no unified dream but a mince pie, long in the baking, never quite done.

For me baking is a way to come down from the stress of evcery day life. First make a well tasting cake with your own hand and then sit in front of the owen waiting for it to be done.

The poem is so inspirational, I remember when I was younger I lived half his life in the kitchen with my mother and her oven with the baking pans, sing, laugh together and we taste, and it was all full of fond memories of my Mom will never forget the life.

tentalizing is the word i'd use to describe baking,
it's sexy in in so many ways,
it's like a sexy girl grinding and shaking,
1 piece of chocolate cake,
and all your worries are out,
you're ready to battle another day, fight scream and shout.

Sorry, i know my poem isn't better than yours, but i still tried. Just my two slices!

superb, nice poem. reminds us of our weekly Friday cake round where each member of the team has to bake a cafe (chocolate) and when the rounds is complete, we have to vote for the best cake and since we have different cultural background, each one has to bring something from their origin...great success.

Try teaching my girlfriend how to cook...

It takes a lot of patience to cook, and probably even more patience to write a poem about it...but nice post!
